Nearly 300 Chinese students were harassed and interrogated by US law enforcement employees at US airports from May to the beginning of September this year as they were leaving the country, the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.

The remarks were made by spokesperson Zhao Lijian, who added that for quite some time, the US has used its judicial powers to harass and interrogate Chinese students in the US at will, and even fabricate accusations to arrest and prosecute Chinese students in the country.

He added that their personal items, such as cell phones and laptops, were seized by the US law enforcement authorities. Nearly 300 Chinese students were harassed and interrogated at airports from May to early September as they were leaving the country, said Zhao.

These actions have exposed the hypocrisy of the US' so-called protection of human rights, and severely violated the legal rights of Chinese students in the country, sabotaged normal people-to-people exchanges and education cooperation between the two countries, said the spokesperson.

He noted that China strongly condemns such behavior, and urges the US to correct its wrongs. China will take all necessary measures to protect the legal rights of Chinese citizens, said Zhao.
