Bo's case shows resilience of rule of law

This is no longer the era where China would rather cover issues up to avoid revealing problems.

Police reinvestigate death of Neil Heywood according to law

Chinese police have set up a team to reinvestigate the case that British citizen Neil Heywood was found dead in Chongqing on Nov. 15, 2011, which was alleged by Wang Lijun who entered, without authorization, the U.S. general consulate in Chengdu on Feb. 6 and stayed there, Xinhua learned from authorities.

Police authorities paid high attention to the case, and set up the team to reinvestigate the case according to law with an attitude to seek truth from facts.

According to investigation results, Bogu Kailai, wife of Comrade Bo Xilai, and their son were in good terms with Heywood. However, they had conflict over economic interests, which had been intensified.

Expert view

Cai Zhiqiang, a professor on Party building with the Party School of the CPC Central Committee, told the Global Times yesterday that the incident would neither disrupt the Party’s 18th National Congress in fall nor the country’s long-term political and social development.

The selection of our cadre group follows its own path, and wouldn’t be affected by any single incident. Any generation of the Party’s central collective leadership will definitely follow the Party’s line and guiding policies, Cai said.

"Believing in the CPC Central Committee"

Trust in Party authority shows social maturity
Believing in the CPC Central Committee has become the norm of the society when the public is in confusion. This has been the guarantee of the cohesion of Chinese society since reform and opening-up began. There's no question that believing in the CPC Central Committee is the biggest ideological and political reality in China.

Wen Jiabao: draw lessons from the case

The incident was seen as giving critics a chance to intensify criticism of Chongqing's development path.
Wen said that the central authorities have taken this matter very seriously and instructed relevant departments to start an investigation immediately.

"Progress has been made in the investigation so far and the issue will be strictly handled based on facts and according to laws," Wen said. "The result of the investigation and how the matter will be dealt with is sure to be made public, which will be able to stand the test of law and history."

Internet rumors

Rumors show global potential of diverse Chinese microblogs

China's microblogs have beenbuzzing all week with rumors about the mysterious disappearance of Wang Lijun, vice mayor and former police chief of Chongqing. Authorities have closed ranks over the case, and Western journalists have largely been limited to drawing upon Weibo, China's most popular microblogging service, which has become increasingly common source for news reports on China.

Official reticence only starts more rumors snowballing
In response to Chongqing's vice mayor Wang Lijun entering the US consulate in Chengdu, formal explanations from both the local government and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reached just 100 words in total. In recent years, the official statements on sensitive issues have always been severely curtailed. The public has to turn to various rumors and speculations to feed their curiosity for the details.

Voices on Fresh Weibo!

Hu Xijin, Global Times editor-in-chief :

"After the authorities issued a brief release on the Wang Lijun incident, who is receiving "vacation-style treatment" for stress, they have yet to mention it again. Obviously they wanted to downplay the whole thing, but have failed to do so. Bo Xilai, the secretary of the CPC Chongqing Committee, appears in several of the incidents which have been highlighted. The implication made by the authorities was clear and has had some effect. But why have the authorities chosen to implicate something instead of giving a clear and direct statement? Why do we have to make guesses behind the news? I don't know how many people will misunderstand the authorities' meaning. Get out of this habit and make this country more frank if you indeed love China."

"It's been over ten days that former Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun had visited the US consulate in Southwest China and stayed there for a day. I hope the authorities release the progress of their investigation on Wang Lijun as soon as possible. All the members of the Chinese Communist Party have the right to be informed of information on his situation, and so does society. The annual two sessions are coming up, and the deputies must greatly care about his situation. And related departments should express a sense of urgency on this matter. Information disclosure is something China must constantly keep making progress on. I hope the Wang Lijun incident will be a new milestone on this type of progress."

@jolayz: To be honest, I don’t trust the ridiculous rumors I read on the Internet. It was not necessary for the Chinese government to surround US consulate by force. I think the media should be more responsible with their reporting, especially when they cover incidents which the public is highly concerned with.

@海海: The Chongqing government should be more cautious on what they say about Wang Lijun. Since the beginning of this incident, the voices from the Chongqing government have always been changing, which makes it hard for them to win the trust of the masses and the media. There is still room for improvement in regards of  the management of China’s government over the public relation crisis.

@逍遥天涯行:
The Chongqing government official said they were to bring Wang back from the US consulate in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, while the US government said Wang just came for a regular meeting there. I don’t know who to trust. I think many people including me want to know the truth and more details of the incident.
