Russian border guards started large-scale drills in Southern Russia, the Federal Border Service said Tuesday.

The Sochi-2012 exercises involved border troops from two Russian regions bordering Georgia as well as air forces of the Federal Security Service (FSB).

"In Sochi on the Russia-Abkhazia border the largest-ever drills have started. The aim of the exercises is to prevent sabotage and terrorism activities on the state border," FSB press service told reporters.

The games scenario envisages blocking a car loaded with arms, capturing a group of terrorists attempting to land from underwater, discharging tension in the Sochi international airport.

Black Sea Resort of Sochi is to host the 22nd Winter Olympics in February 2014. The city is located just a few kilometers of the border with Abkhazia - a breakaway Georgian province.

Russia is among a handful of countries which recognize independence of Abkhazia along with another seceded Georgian territory of Southern Ossetia since 2008.

Under the theme of "Hot. Cool. Yours.", the Sochi Olympics will feature 98 medal events, which is 12 more than the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. In winter 2012-2013, a series of test competitions will be held in the Olympics venues.
