Future Dutch King Willem-Alexander to lay down official functions

The future King of the Netherlands Prince Willem-Alexander will lay down all his official functions this year following the announcement of abdication by his mother Queen Beatrix, said the Dutch Government Information Service (RVD) on Tuesday.

Among other functions Prince Willem-Alexander will quit his chairmanship of the USAB, the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation.

He will also step down as member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). According to procedures he is expected to be leaving the IOC by the end of this year.

Prince Willem-Alexander's wife, the future Queen Maxima, will maintains her other positions after the changing of the throne. Among other functions she will continue as special adviser on financial services of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

On Monday current Queen Beatrix announced her abdication in favor of her eldest son Prince Willem-Alexander. The resignation from the throne will take place on April 30 this year.

This date was supposed to be the traditional celebration of Queen's Day, but will now be the day of the inauguration of the new King in Amsterdam.

Starting in 2014 the Dutch will no longer celebrate Queen's Day on April 30, but King's Day on April 27 instead, the birthday of Willem-Alexander.
