The preliminary results of Chile's first-ever presidential primaries on Sunday showed that former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet and former Economy Minister Pablo Longueira have won their candidacy for the Chilean presidential election.

As Chile's first female president, Bachelet led the South American country from 2006 to 2010. She won 73.35 percent of the vote in the primary, with nearly 97 percent of the vote counted.

Her two main rivals in the center-left New Majority opposition coalition, Andres Velasco and Claudio Orrego, have conceded their defeat and pledged to support her in the upcoming presidential election.

Meanwhile, Longueira beat out his contender, former Defense Minister Andres Allamand, in the ruling conservative Alliance for Chile in the primary, and won the candidacy for the presidential bid.

According to preliminary figures, Longueira won 51.25 percent of the vote, while Allamand got 48.74 percent.

The Chilean presidential election is scheduled for Nov. 17, which is to see a fierce battle between Bachelet and Longueria for the country's top position.

On Sunday, at least 2 million voters braved frigid temperatures to vote in the primaries.

Citing preliminary numbers, Cristian Larroulet, minister of the presidency, said the turnout was better than the 1.5 million voters initially expected out of a total of some 13 million eligible voters.

Polls show Bachelet holds a commanding lead not just over her party rivals, but also over the conservatives, and is likely to become president for a second time.
