Russia's Victor An won the men's 1,000m short track title at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games on Saturday.

An, who used to be called An Hyun-Soo, finished first in one minute and 25.325 seconds. Another Russian Vladimir Grigorev took the silver in 1:25.399, while European champion Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands came in third with 1:25.611.

"I'm very happy, but I'm even more happy because Russia managed to win both the gold and silver," said An.

Chinese Wu Dajing, winner of the event at the Seoul World Cup last year, took the last place in 1:25.772, while Han Tianyu, runner-up in the 1,500m, failed to make the final A.

An, who was a three-time Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion for his native South Korea, switched his nationalities three years ago.

Earlier Saturday, China's reigning Olympic champion Zhou Yang retained her women's 1,500m title.

Zhou trailed South Korean Shim Suk Hee after the first four laps but outsprinted her in the final lap. Her winning mark was 2:19.140, while Shim, runner-up of the event at the 2013 World Championships, took the silver in 2:19.239. Italian veteran Arianna Fontana came in third in 2:19.416.
