Belarus will do its utmost to maintain and develop relations with Ukraine, Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko said Tuesday.

"Preservation and further development of political, trade, economic, and cultural ties with Ukraine are still among Belarusian priorities," Lukashenko said after a session of the country's Security Council in Minsk which focused on the political situation in Ukraine and its impact on the state of Belarusian national security.

Lukashenko stressed that the events occurring in Ukraine are posing no direct threat to Belarus.

"Our country is keen on seeing civil peace, calm and stability in Ukraine," he said. Belarus does not aspire for the leading position in the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict. However, Lukashenko added, Belarus will do its best to preserve and bolster relations with the brotherly nation.
