German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday expressed her support for international talks involving Ukraine in dealing with the ongoing crisis in the country, according to a government statement.

Addressing the lower house of parliament, Merkel said Ukraine has the right to choose its own development path and must make decisions about the country's own fate.

"It is important to hold international talks which involve Ukraine," she noted.

The chancellor told lawmakers that the German government will keep using its communication channels with Moscow. She also called on Russia to sit at the same table with the new government in Ukraine.

Merkel also urged Kiev to push forward its constitutional reform and ensure fair preparations for the presidential election slated for May 25.

She called for a personnel increase of an observer mission to Ukraine, deployed by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), from 100 to 500 and urged the international community and the European Union (EU) to ensure that the promised financial assistance can quickly be given to the country.

Pro-Russia activists seized several government buildings in eastern Ukraine on Sunday, demanding closer ties with Moscow and a referendum to give more powers to local authorities.

The new development came after Crimea left Ukraine to join Russia last month.

On Monday, Moscow and Washington initiated an idea to create a contact group consisting of top diplomats from Ukraine, Russia, the EU and the United States and hold multilateral talks within 10 days.
