Moscow is not going to extradite ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika said Friday.

"We see no ground for his extradition," Chaika told reporters during his trip to the Crimean capital of Simferopol.

He noted that Russia still considers Yanukovych a fully legitimate president. "He did not commit any crimes," the prosecutor said.

On the opposite, Chaika added, Moscow questions the legitimacy of the current Ukrainian authorities, who "have seized power through an armed coup and committed a bunch of crimes which requires investigation."

Yanukovych left Ukraine for Russia shortly after the country's parliament, the Supreme Rada, ousted him on Feb. 22. Kiev later issued an international search warrant in his name.

After leaving Ukraine, Yanukovych appeared in front of reporters for three times in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

Ukraine's prosecutor general announced February that it would launch extradition proceedings for Yanukovych's return.
