Experts urge Latvia to pick up speed on reforms

Representatives of the European Commission and the European Central Bank upon their visit to Latvia praised country's overall macroeconomic situation, however, noted slow pace of some important reforms.

The head of the delegation Christian Weise said after a meeting with Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma that ''the macroeconomic situation in Latvia is good, and we are happy that Latvia has made the first repayment in time. We are seeing development in Latvia, but would wish to see even more development in some areas."

Some ongoing reforms, including are higher education, insolvency process legislation, as well as state administration, raised concerns of the experts.

The European Commission and the European Central Bank are Latvia's main international lenders. During the period of financial crisis, Latvia received a financial aid program of 4.5 billion euros (6.25 billion US dollars), among which 2.9 billion euros were lend by the European Commission.
