Cardiovascular diseases remain leading cause of death in Germany: Destatis

Cardiovascular diseases remain the most common cause of death in Germany, announced the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) on Thursday.

A total of 893,825 people died in Germany in 2013, which was an increase of 2.8 percent compared with a year earlier, said the Destatis.

As in the previous years, the most frequent cause of death was cardiovascular disease, accounting for 39.7 percent of all deaths in 2013, a total of 354,493 people.

With a share of about one quarter of all deaths, cancer was the second most common cause of death in Germany, as around 220,000 people died of cancer in 2013 in Germany.

Meanwhile, around 36,000 people died from the consequences of mental and behavioral disorders in 2013 in Germany, which made a significant increase of 16.9 percent compared to the previous year.

In 80 percent of these deaths, dementia disease was the cause of death, and these diagnoses increase continuously for years in Germany, as the data showed.
