Austrian police on Friday confirmed there were 71 dead bodies, including of kids and women, in the abandoned truck that was found parked at the side of a highway Thursday.

The 71 dead bodies included 59 men, eight women, 3 boys aged 8-10, and one 1-2 year-old baby girl, police said Friday at a press conference here. On Thursday, Austrian officials said the number of dead people was estimated to be 20 to 50.

Inside the lorry, police found a document which could be traced to Syria, and based on that, police said the dead people might be from Syria.

Three suspects have been arrested in Hungary, with one Lebanese with Bulgarian citizenship who is suspected to be the truck owner, the other two being Bulgarian and Hungarian.

The police said the lorry might have parked at the side of the motorway over 24 hours.

The truck carrying Hungarian license plates was found by police to be parked just outside Vienna on Thursday at around 6 a.m. local time (0400 GMT), and it was finally opened at 11:30 a.m. (0930 GMT) when police found dead bodies inside the truck.

Burgenland Police told Xinhua the truck once belonged to a Slovakian company but was sold to someone two years ago.

Police speculated all the bodies might be those of refugees.

The truck was captured on camera in the south of Budapest at around 3 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) on Wednesday and was later spotted on camera near the Hungarian side of the border with Austria at around 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) on Wednesday.

Hungarian media reported the truck was registered to a Romanian national.
