The south coast of Spain and the northern coast of Morocco on Saturday experienced two earthquakes registering 4.5 and 4.6 on the Richter Scale, the Spanish Geographical Institute informs.

It is the third day that the region has suffered a quake of 4.5 or above.

The quakes, which happened shortly after 15:00 o'clock local time, once again had their epicenter in the zone of the Western Mediterranean known as the Alboran Sea.

The effects of the quakes were felt in various provinces in the south of Spain, including Malaga and Almeria, while the shockwaves were also felt in the Spanish north-African enclave of Melilla.

The fact that the tremors happened at a depth of 10 km below the sea bed limited their destructive effects and although the quakes were widely commented on social media networks no injuries or damage to property has so far been reported.

These quakes follow two quakes of 5.0 and 4.1 on the Richter Scale which were reported in the early hours of Friday morning, while a further quake of 4.5 on the Richter Scale was confirmed in the same area on Thursday morning.

The Albonan Sea sits astride the boundary between the African and Eurasian plates and has been especially active since January 25 when a quake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale caused damage to property estimated at 12 million euros (around 13.5 million US dollars) in Melilla and injured 26 people.

Meanwhile over 50 quakes and tremors, many too small to be noted, have been measured in the zone over the past month.
