1960s

Sun Zhongshan, the temporary president of Republic of China (1912-1949) discarded complicated Western-style clothes, and mandated government officials wear the Japanese uniform. It evolved into the Chinese suit, which had four patch pockets on the outside. The new-style suit was not only convenient and practical, but it also had a revolutionary implication: The pocket lids were like inverted triangle penholders, putting emphasis on revolutionary writers. Meanwhile, the five buttons represented the five powers outlined in the proposed constitution. The Chinese suit quickly became the country' s most popular outfit of that era.

After the Cultural Revolution, the blue and gray uniforms were replaced with "national-defense green", or military uniforms. The Red Guards (largely composed of students) tended to stand out in their green outfits. Young women preferred to wear military uniforms rather than feminine clothes.
