"The over-two-decade sanctions and pressure on Myanmar have not had a significant effect, which has made the US reconsider its policy," said Song Qingyun, an expert on Myanmar from the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations.

"Although Myanmar also favors warming relations with the US to overcome its economic difficulties, the relations between the two are still facing many problems," Song said

"Myanmar is not the US' focal point at this moment, and there are still issues such as Suu Kyi, on which two sides hold different opinions," Song added.

Nyan Win, a spokesman for Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, told AFP that Campbell's visit "is the start of direct engagement between the US and the Myanmar government."

"But we do not expect an exact and big change from this meeting. This visit is just a first step," he added.
