An audacious thief may have been thinking of the Chinese proverb "the most dangerous place is the safest," after he entered a police compound and attempted to steal a scooter, disproving the wisdom of the Chinese saying, and his own.

The thief surnamed Ye from Liuzhou, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region somehow managed to get past the heavy rolling gate in front of the Zhongnan police station early Friday morning, according to surveillance video posted by Chinanews.com on social media on Saturday.

The surveillance video shows Ye attempting to push the scooter, which was left unlocked, out of the gate. He never stood a change.

The video report says Ye thought the police might not be so vigilant watching their surveillance monitors inside the police station as few people would have the temerity to try such an unwise stunt.

The video had attracted Chinese internet users' attention and was viewed more than 740,000 times as of Sunday.

Many netizens found it hilarious and thought the theft was beyond stupidity.

"Is there anyone who really believes in the lame proverb 'the most dangerous place is the safest'?" one netizen asked. "Maybe he did not even realize it was a police station when he did the stealing."

"It would have been a great story if the thief had gotten away with it," said another.
