Chang'e 4 on moon's far side


Chang'e-4 made the first-ever soft landing on the far side of the moon on January 3, marking a breakthrough in human exploration of the moon. The lunar lander touched down and sent signals from the moon's far side to the Earth for the first time.

Days of unrest in HK


Since protests started in June, rioters in Hong Kong have surrounded Hong Kong police headquarters, disrupted government agencies, ransacked the Legislative Council (LegCo) building, and defaced the HKSAR regional emblem. Shockingly violent acts occurred at the Hong Kong International Airport in August. Some violent radicals brutally assaulted and injured Global Times reporter Fu Guohao.

Grand celebration


A celebratory event, including a military parade, marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) was held on October 1 at the Tiananmen Square in Beijing. China-US trade conflict


After more than two years of on-and-off trade talks, China and the US agreed on the text of a phase one economic and trade agreement on December 13 based on the principle of equality and mutual respect.

Huawei in China-US 5G race


China's telecom giant Huawei has taken the lead over US companies in the race for 5G technological supremacy. Despite pressure from Washington on its allies to ban the Chinese telecom giant, Huawei has reportedly secured more than 50 commercial contracts for 5G across the world. On March 7, Huawei sued the US government for "unconstitutional sales restrictions imposed by the US Congress." The US announced on November 18 it would extend a temporary license loosening restrictions on business deals with Huawei for another 90 days.
