Beijing has tested more than 40,000 people for the novel coronavirus since April 1, with two turning out to be positive, the capital's health official said on Monday at a press conference, noting that imported cases still present the biggest risk to the capital.

Of the 40,000 people receiving tests, 3,122 are international arrivals, including the two who showed positive results, Pang Xinghuo, deputy director of the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said at the press conference.

Imported cases are still the biggest risk facing Beijing, while the risk of local cases and cases from other provinces and regions in China is low, Pang noted.

From March 31 to April 12, 459 samples were collected from international arrivals at Beijing ports and all were negative for coronavirus, according to Pang.

From April 8, the day Wuhan reopened after two months of lockdown, to April 12, 1,037 Hubei returnees also received tests for COVID-19 and no infections were discovered, she said.

Beijing will continue to conduct nucleic acid tests for high risk groups, including international arrivals, and strictly require concentrated or home quarantine for these groups, according to Pang.
