Tianjin University, one of the oldest universities and leading academic centers in China, welcomes applications from students all over the world.

Located in North China's Tianjin Municipality, the university was initially established in 1895 as Peiyang University under the approval of the Guangxu Emperor of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and was later restructured and renamed as Tianjin University under the direct administration of China's Ministry of Education in 1951.

Tianjin University is one of the leading universities in Asia as shown by the World Top 100 list in the QS Asia University Rankings in 2020, where it is ranked the 85th.

A total of 14 disciplines at the academic center including Chemical Engineering and Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering and Instruments Science and Technology and Management Science and Engineering have achieved the A level, which means the departments for these disciplines rank in the top 10 percent across China.

Its reputation for outstanding academic achievement reflects the world-class original research carried out by the staff of the university.

In February, a research team from Tianjin University successfully developed a detection kit for the COVID-19 nucleic acid in cooperation with a biotechnology company. The kit can detect suspected cases during the early incubation period and shortened the virus detection time from three hours to only an hour.

The dominant disciplines at the university attract a large number of international students, among whom some also show a strong interest in the university's preparatory course and Chinese language learning project.

As a Chinese language education base approved by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Tianjin University recruits many international students every year to learn Chinese language and culture.

In 2019, Tianjin University enrolled 4,391 international students from 139 countries and regions. This number has continued to expand.

Students can apply for various scholarships of the university, the local government and the Confucius Institute, and have the opportunity to participate in some exchange programs nationwide.

Istvan Tihanyi, a Hungarian graduated from Tianjin University in 2018, set up his own business of opening a wine store in Tianjin.

He was very grateful to be able to speak Chinese, which helps him build a bridge to introduce Hungarian wine culture to China, and provides more opportunities for exchanges and cooperation between Hungary and China.

With the significant increase in the influence of China in the world, China has become the largest destination country for studying abroad in Asia.
