Haidian district government has officially scrapped plans for a garbage incinerator near Liulitun landfill, opting for a new location in Dagong village of Sujiatuo township, the Beijing Times reported Thursday.

"The Sujiatuo garbage incinerator will replace the Liulitun incinerator, and we won't build any incinerators in Liulitun," said Zhao Fengtong, secretary of Haidian District Committee.

The new Sujiatuo facility, scheduled for completion by the end of 2012, will burn 2,000 tons of garbage daily.

Haidian district produces 2,500 tons of garbage per day, which is estimated to fill the district's only landfill [Liulitun landfill] by 2012, Zhao said.

The district government came up with building a new incinerator just south of the Liulitun landfill in 2006, but the plan was shelved due to residents' outcry over pollution.

Liulitun locals have been complaining about the odor from the landfill for years. The Sujiatuo incinerator is 20 kilometers away from Liulitun in a relatively less populated area.

Construction of the 1.26 billion yuan ($189.69 million) Sujiatuo incinerator will begin in July after it passes an environmental evaluation process next month. A display screen that shows a pollutant discharge index will be installed at the new facility in the future.

Four villages including Dagong village will be relocated to make way for the new incinerator, and the district government will build temporary housing for all those affected in Sujiatuo township.
