Three trams crash in Bucharest, over 50 injured

More than 50 people were injured Thursday morning after a crash involving three trams in western Bucharest, capital city of Romania.

According to witnesses, there were trams stopped with about one hundred meters ahead as the tram entering the Lujer Passag. The driver pressed the brake, but the tram struck the front tram strongly, which in turn entered in the first one which stopped there because of technical failure.

Two trams were derailed on the line after the accident.

Two people were injured more severely, requiring surgery, according to doctor Leo Grecescu of University Emergency Hospital Bucharest.

Most victims are from the second tram, but there are some injured in the first tram too, said Bogdan Oprita, head of the emergency rescue service in Bucharest.

Those injured were taken by ambulance SMURD Floreasca Hospital and University Emergency Hospital Bucharest.

The road traffic is still blocked in the Lujer Passage, after the most serious road traffic accident in Bucharest in last years.
