Cuba names canoeing team for London Olympic Games

Four kayakers and two canoeists will represent Cuba in the London Olympic Games, scheduled from July 27 to August 12, Evidio Gonzalez, technical director of the team said here Thursday.

The list is comprised by the canoeists Sergey Torres and Jose Carlos Bulnes in tandem (C-2), and the kayakers Jorge Garcia and Darisleidys Amador in the single (K-1), and the duo Yulitza Meneses-Dayexis Gandarela (K-2).

Gonzalez said that the couple Torres-Garcia and the single Bulnes will row at the 1,000 meters, while Amador will attend the 500 and 200 meters, and the Gandarela-Meneses duo the 500 meters.

Garcia is the only one with Olympic experience then he competed in Beijing 2008, where he finished in 11th in the K-1.

As part of its preparation, they will travel to Mexico for a three-week training base, "very helpful" to reduce the times, and getting ready for the summer competition on August 6, according to Gonzalez.

The canoeing contest in London at the Eton Dorney Lake will be attended by 246 athletes, including 88 females.
