Does MSF operate around the world?

MSF, a non-profit, self-governed organization, operates in over 60 countries and regions around the world.

MSF sends over 3,000 field workers each year, including doctors, nurses, logisticians, sanitation experts and other medical and non-medical professionals, to work with 25,000 local staff in the areas.

Where does its funding come from?

MSF raises most of its finances from private sources. More than 5 million individual donors around the world provide 90 percent of the organization's funding.

The remaining funds come from institutional donors, individual government aid budgets and other international organizations.

How many offices does MSF have in China?

The Hong Kong office was set up in 1994. Since then, a representative office in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, has been set up and Beijing now has two MSF offices.

What are MSF's major projects in China?

MSF first started work in Hong Kong in 1988 when it provided medical facilities and treatment for Vietnamese refugees fleeing their home country as a result of the Vietnam War from the previous three decades. The project lasted about 10 years, until the refugees were resettled or repatriated.

At the same time, MSF started offering emergency relief in 1988 to those in the Chinese mainland affected by natural disasters.

From 1991 to 2002, MSF ran a Kashin-Beck disease research and treatment project in the Tibet Autonomous Region, helping those suffering from this debilitating bone and joint disease.

MSF also provided social support and medical care to street children in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province between 1997 and 2006.

Finally, from 2003 to 2010, MSF worked with the Guangxi Center for Disease Control, providing free and confidential care and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS in Nanning.

Any significant day for MSF in China?

July 7 marks MSF Day in Hong Kong, a day devoted to public fundraising campaigns. The date was introduced to the Chinese mainland for the first time this year as an occasion to raise the organization's popularity and people's awareness.

How to become a volunteer for MSF?

Basic requirements for both medical and non-medical volunteers include at least two years professional experience in your chosen field of expertise, fluency in English or French and availability for a minimum of 12 months.

After submitting an application, shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by phone and then have a face-to-face interview.
