Have you ever wondered about getting dental veneers or crowns? Need a filling, but don't want an ugly black spot in your mouth? Perhaps you should consider getting a CEREC treatment.

What is CEREC?

CEREC, or CERamic REConstruction, is a machine that aids dentists in producing various forms of ceramic dental reconstruction products including fillings, crowns and veneers. First, a small digital camera takes a picture inside your mouth, digitalizing a "map" of your tooth onto a computer. Then, out of a block of porcelain, diamond coated instruments create that restoration that fits precisely in place, protecting your teeth.

Advantages

The major benefits of CEREC are quality, longevity and the aesthetics of a porcelain versus other filling.

For teeth that have fillings that are too large and need replacement, I recommend these porcelain fillings. They are much harder, and the materials we use can be tightly controlled, ensuring quality and traceability. Fillings can fail again in large cavities, but porcelain is durable and lasts a long time.

Dentists can finish a CEREC reconstruction and placement within one visit. The preparation takes about 40 minutes, with the remaining time being used for confection and cementation of the filling.

Disadvantages

Due to the quality of porcelain materials, CEREC is more expensive than other types of fillings and reconstructions. It also tends to take a little longer, due to the reconstruction time.

CEREC is technique-sensitive, as porcelain could chip. Also, crowns are more extensive than fillings. Precision is most important. It can be difficult to tell if it fits properly, which can lead to future complications.

However, thankfully all our dentists at BJU who use CEREC are well-trained to handle the machine and materials.

Is there pain?

As with other fillings, our dentists use a local anesthesia, so the patient doesn't feel any pain.
