The graveyard of Xiong Xiling (1870-1937) in Fragrant Hills has been restored to its original state, the Beijing Morning Post reported.
Born in Xiangxi, Hunan Province, Xiong was an educator, reformist, philanthropist and social activist. His graveyard is a cultural relic preservation unit of Haidian district. Due to destructive activities during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) and lack of maintenance, the gravesite had become a garbage dump and a destination for squatters.
By October of this year, all the squatters had been removed from the area and ten tons of rubbish had been cleared. There are plans to open an exhibition center of Xiong's life nearby.
