A newly renovated pedestrian street mimicking the traditional old town landscape of northern China has opened to the public in Huairou district as a scenic spot to the APEC conference area, the Beijing Daily reported.
The local government has spent 50 million yuan ($8 million) in reconstructing the once dilapidated street to a commercial neighborhood with ancient style courtyards, stores, restaurants and pavilions. Visitors can not only enjoy more than 60 local snacks across China on the street, but also Western food such as coffee and bread.
According to historical records, the area, called Yan township, was a temporary imperial residence during the Liao period (916-1125). The APEC conference will be held in Huairou in September.
