A smart garbage sorting system that collects kitchen waste and recyclables from Beijing residents will be implemented in 1,000 residential communities in Beijing in 2016, according to the Beijing Environment Sanitation Group's announcement on March 9, the Beijing Daily reported.

The new addition will increase the number of residential communities involved in the program to around 1,300.

Under the sorting system, residents can pack their recyclables, such as newspapers or drinks bottles, stick on a QR code tag, and put it into a receptacle. For large items, they can also register via WeChat and staff members from the group will go their home to collect it.

The system gives residents special points for their waste, which can be used as shopping coupons in certain supermarkets in Beijing.
