South beat North 102-97 in CBA All-Star game

NINGBO, Zhejiang Province, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The South All-Star Team beat the North Team 102-97 Sunday at the 2009 All-Star Game of the Chinese Basketball Association league (CBA) here, with Bayi Fubang's center Wang Zhizhi winning the Most Valuable Player reward.

Center Olumide Oyedeji from Shannxi Zhongyu had the game-high 24 points but failed to lead the North Team to win the match.

Wang had 12 points to lead the South Team to 38-18 in the first quarter when every one of all the 10 starters played a full quarter.

Three foreign players were all pitched in the second quarter to add more fun. Guard Xu Guochong from Xinjiang Guanghui made three3-pointers to score 13 points, cutting the deficit to 43-42 before the South Team pulled away again on 55-46 in the first half.

Most of the starters rested in the third quarter as the first-round matches of the playoffs would start on Wednesday. The more energetic North Team took the advantage to tie it on 59-59 midway in the third quarter with Olumide having 14 points in one quarter.

Leading 77-72 into the fourth quarter, the North Team held onto the lead until Wang and Zhu returned two minutes into the decisive period. Wang picked up the defense by suffocating Olumide inside the key to initiate a comeback before the South Team leveled it on92-92 with 3:16 minutes left.

The South scored the next eight points when the counterpart missed a series of 3-pointer attempts, putting the game beyond doubt on 100-92 with 29 seconds to go.

Zhang Wei from Shanxi Yalv had 20 points and Xu 16 points for the North Team, while Rooney White scoring 19 points for the South.
