The Obscure (1999)

Directed by Lu Yue, The Obscure was filmed in 1999, but originally failed to make it past China’s censors, due to its complex content and sharp style.
Part documentary and part fiction, the first half of the film follows several famous writers as they discuss whether “poetry is still alive in our time,” while the second fictitious part follows a couple as they rekindle an old romance.

 

Our Fragrance (2003)

Directed by Cheon Jong-pal, Our Fragrance focuses on the pull between the conservative and the modern in Korea. The film features the relationship between Pyeong-ho, who comes from a conservative family and develops new takes on the traditional Korean dish kimchi, and Sae-byeol, a young interpreter accustomed to a more westernised life. As the story unfolds, the clash between traditional and modern Korean lifestyles comes to the fore.

 

E.T. (1982)

Directed by Steven Spielberg, E.T. is a timeless classic about the unique bond forged between several children and a surprise visitor from outer space. Spielberg’s masterpiece narrates the story of little Elliot, who befriends and cares for an alien, and all the adventures that befall Elliot as he tries to help the alien find his way home.

 

My Favorite Season (1993)

André Téchiné’s My Favorite Season narrates the story of estranged siblings Emilie and Antoine, who are drawn back together by their mother’s heart disease. Her eventual death helps the pair to face the past and reconsider their relationship. The movie was honored by the Boston Society of Film Critics in 1996.

 

American Fork (2007)
