Sister Jiang at NCPA

Wang Li as Sister Jiang.

Chinese opera Sister Jiang will be staged in the National Center for the Performing Arts Thursday until Saturday, offering the audience in the capital a chance to revisit this Chinese red classic opera.

The opera is based on the novel Red Crag, and was first staged in 1960s. Since its debut, it has been widely acclaimed as a milestone in the history of Chinese national opera.

Actresses of four generations have featured in Sister Jiang and sung the household song Ode to Red Plum before 2008 when the fifth generation of Sister Jiang took center stage and made a great sensation.

The Art Troupe of Air Force Political Department of the PLA presents the new version of Sister Jiang. It is presented with advanced stage design and is infused with new social connotation.

The opening ceremony will for the first time play Nie Er’s original songs composed 70 years ago and the national anthem, “March of the Volunteers,” sung in English by American famous singer Paul Robertson during the World War II.

Moreover, General Luo Lang, the 90-year-old legendary conductor of the military band in the founding ceremony for the PRC on October 1, 1949, will be on stage for a grand chorus with singers from Russia and the US.

During the music week, a series of events, including a chorus competition, talks and forums on music, and concerts by local and foreign artists, will be held in Yuxi.
