Rio Group regrets UN's light plane crash in Haiti

The Rio Group Tuesday regretted the crash of a light plane belonging to the United Nations (UN) Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah), which killed 11 people including UN officers and soldiers.

The group expressed in a statement "its deep sorrow for this sad event."

It added that the group "conveys its most sincere condolences to the relatives of the 11 victims."

The light plane crashed on October 9 in the southeast of Ganthier province in Haiti, when it was conducting a vigilance task near the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

The UN Security Council created Minustah in 2004 to restore order in Haiti after then president Jean Bertrand Aristide was ousted.

The Rio Group comprises of Latin American countries including Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Mexico currently holds the rotating presidency of this regional organization.
