gain face/ 有面子/ (yǒu miànzǐ)

A: Did you know that recently that there was a video of a waiter being scolded for stopping a customer from wasting food?

(nǐ zhīdào zuìjìn yǒu yīɡè fúwùyuán yīn zhìzhǐ kèrén jiùcān shí lànɡfèi shíwù érbèi mà de shìpín lema?)

B: I haven't seen it. But hearing about it, it doesn't sound like anything good.

(wǒ méikàn, dàn tīnɡzhe ɡǎnjué bùshì shenme hǎoshì.)

A: There is a restaurant where the average cost is two hundred yuan per person. Two customers ordered 1,000 yuan in dishes, but wasted a lot of the food. The waiter tried to stop them, but the customers yelled at them and said "I'm happy to do it."

(zài yīɡè rénjūn xiāofèi liǎnɡbǎiyuán de cāntīnɡ, yǒu liǎnɡwèi ɡùkè diǎnle yīqiānyuán de cài, lànɡfèi le hěnduō. fúwùyuán shànɡqián zhìzhǐ tāmén, quèbèi kèrén nùhǒu chēnɡ "wǒlèyì".)

B: Why did they order so much?

(nà wéishenme tāmén yàodiǎn zhèmeduō dōnɡxī ne?)

A: Because one of the customers was paying for the meal and wanted to gain face by being hospitable.

(yīnwéi qízhōnɡ yīɡè ɡùkè qǐnɡkè, xiǎnɡyào rànɡ zìjǐ xiǎndé ɡènɡyǒu miànzǐ, ɡènɡhǎokè.)

B: Really? I guess, but in my opinion it looks to be a bit foolish.

(shìma? hǎobā, zàiwǒ kànlái zhèyànɡ duōshǎo yǒuxiē yúchǔn.)
