A primary school in Puer, Southwest China's Yunnan Province, has put up a special barrier to prevent elephants from entering it.

The anti-elephant facilities in Naji village primary school were established after 2019 when over a dozen elephants entered the school and knocked down all the palm trees on campus.

After that incident, the school built a steel frame around the campus, which is 24 meters long, 3.2 meters tall, and weighs 15 tons.

"No elephants have entered the school since the fence was built, " Zhu Chao, the school principal, explained in a video posted by Pear Video on Chinese social platform Sina Weibo on Tuesday.

Zhu said that the school had been visited by wild elephants on two occasions, the first time in 2017 and then in 2019.

"There is a lot of food that the wild elephants like to eat in these mountains and forests, and wild elephant herds have settled and lived here for a long time," Zhu said.

At present, the school has seven classes with 164 students, of whom 146 live on campus, Zhu said. Both teachers and students have been taught about how to protect themselves when elephants come.
