HK buses, trams ‘put on new suits’ featuring CPC elements to celebrate Party’s 100th anniversary

With a week away from the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on July 1, and also the 24th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, buses and trams in the special administrative region have "put on new suits" in red featuring CPC elements to celebrate the big day.

June 30 also marked the 1st anniversary of the national security law for Hong Kong in effective.

The buses are seen with the slogan "celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of CPC, and the 24th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland."

Hong Kong Celebration Association will hold a series of activities on July 1 including a light show at the Victoria Harbor. People can enjoy the show without buying tickets.

Local media reported on Tuesday that the streets in the city are filled with a joyous atmosphere of love for the motherland and Hong Kong. Many residents said they are proud to be Chinese, media said.

Chan Yung, a Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC), told the Global Times on Wednesday that this year's anniversary will be a turning point for Hong Kong as it is the first time that the city celebrates the CPC's anniversary so openly and grandly.

In the past, the CPC was a sensitive word for a few people in Hong Kong. But now, the CPC has become a word representing positive energy and will become even more familiar with Hong Kong residents, Chan noted.

On Monday, the current and previous Hong Kong deputies to the NPC visited a number of historical sites which witnessed the War of the Chinese People's Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), including Wujiaoteng Martyr Memorial Garden and Luojia House, in memory of the horoic martyrs fallen during the war.

Many other activities will be held in the city.

A series of 100 years of Chinese female beauty films has been broadcast on WeChat, Facebook and YouTube channels of Hong Kong Island Women Association.

On June 26, Xiqu Center located in West Kowloon Cultural District will hold the opening ceremony of the centennial Chinese women's talent concert and photo exhibition, which will be broadcast online by Hong Kong Island Women Association on Facebook.

On July 1, Hong Kong's Central and Western District and Southern District will hold a float parade while variety shows will be held in Wan Chai District and Eastern District. Young people in Hong Kong will perform a 100-person flash mob singing at 25 iconic spots, including Golden Bauhinia Square.

So Cheung-wing, chairman of Hong Kong Island Federation, was quoted by the local media outlet Wenweipo.com on Tuesday saying that as the largest political party in the world, the CPC has led the development of China and marched a centenary journey, which deserves grand celebration in Hong Kong and the whole country.  

"I believe that as time goes after Hong Kong's return to the motherland, Hong Kong will become more integrated into the overall development of the country. The residents will have a deeper understanding of the Party," So noted.
