Chinese para-swimmers make clean sweep in men’s 50m freestyle

Chinese para-athletes bagged six golds, five silvers and four ­bronzes at the Tokyo Paralympic Games on Wednesday to ­extend Team China's grip atop the medal tally with 68 golds, 43 silvers and 36 bronzes.

Their most dominating performance come in the swimming pool. Zheng Tao, Yuan Weiyi and Wang Lichao swept the podium with a Chinese 1-2-3 finish in the men's 50 meters freestyle - S5. Zheng took gold with a new Paralympic record of 31.31 seconds, while Yuan and Wang touched the wall 0.80 and 1.04 seconds behind him, respectively.

In the men's long jump - T38, Zhu Dening and Zhong Huanghao achieved a Chinese 1-2. Zhu broke the previous world record of 7.13 ­meters, set by compatriot Hu Jianwen in October 2015 in Doha, with a jump of 7.31 meters. Zhong tool silver with a personal best of 6.80 meters, a mere 0.02 meters ahead of bronze medalist Jose Greogorio Lemos Rivas of Colombia.

The 22-year-old Zhu is the world's top-ranked athlete in both the men's 100 meters and long jump. He pocketed a silver medal in the 100 meters - T38 on Saturday, after finishing fastest in the heats. 

"I am very excited to win a gold because this is a very big platform to stand on," Zhu said Wednesday. "I was thinking of my country when standing on the podium. Without China's influence, I wouldn't have been standing there at all."

In the women's 100 meters - T36, Shi Yiting won gold with a time of 13.61 seconds, refreshing her own previous world record - which was set in July 2017 in London - by 0.07 seconds. The Paralympic record of 13.82 seconds in the discipline was set by another Chinese athlete, Wang Fang, in the Beijing 2008 Paralympics.

In the women's individual - W1 archery final, Chen Minyi won her second gold in Tokyo, after her Saturday victory in the mixed team event. She beat Sarka Musilova of the Czech Republic by a wide margin of 142-131.

One day after winning gold in the women's 1,500 meters - T54, Zhou Zhaoqian stood on the top of the podium again in the 100 meters. She finished with a time of 15.90 seconds, 0.10 seconds short of the Paralympic record she set earlier in the day.

Gao Fang was the first to cross the finish line in the women's 100 meters - T53 in 16.29 seconds, 0.19 seconds before compatriot Zhou Hongzhuan. Both Chinese posted their personal season best in the final. China's Huang Lisha holds the discipline's world and Paralympic records at 16.19 seconds, set in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics.
