Paddlers sweep team table tennis golds

Chinese Paralympians strengthened their lead atop the medal tally at the Tokyo Paralympic Games on Thursday with nine golds, three silvers and eight bronzes, bringing their total to 77 golds, 46 silvers and 44 bronzes. With three days to go at the Games, Team China is well on course to top the final Paralympics medal table for a fifth consecutive time. Second-placed Great Britain has amassed 34 golds, 27 silvers and 35 bronzes.

Chinese shooter Huang Xing successfully defended the title he won five years ago in Rio de Janeiro after claiming gold in the P3 mixed 25-meter pistol - SH1 final with a Paralympic record 27 points. He holds the world record of 36 points in the discipline, set in May 2018 in Cheongju, South Korea. Huang bagged a silver behind compatriot Yang Chao two days earlier in the men's 10-meter air pistol - SH1.

Cyclist Chen Jianxin pocketed his second gold medal in Tokyo after heading home first in the men's T1-2 road race in 51:05 minutes. He was the best performer in the T1-2 time trial final on Tuesday.

In swimming, Jiang Yuyan, the youngest member of the Chinese delegation at 16, claimed her second gold, and third medal, in Tokyo. She touched the wall first with a world record 5 minutes, 4.57 seconds in the women's 400 meters freestyle - S6. The swimmer, nicknamed "Flying Fish," won gold in the women's 50 meters butterfly - S6 in a world record time of 34.69 seconds on Monday. She has also bagged a bronze medal in the 100 meters freestyle - S7. 

Chinese runner Wen Xiaoyan was first to cross the finish line in the women's 100 meters - T37. She set a new world record of 13.00 seconds en route to winning her third gold in the Tokyo Paralympics. She had already stood on the top of the podium twice in Tokyo, in the women's 200 meters - T37, and the long jump - T37. Wen won two gold medals and a silver in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Wen's compatriot Jiang Fenfen bagged a bronze on Thursday, just 0.01 seconds behind silver medalist Jaleen Roberts of the US, despite achieving a personal best of 13.17 seconds. She was the gold medalist in the women's 400 ­meters - T37 on Tuesday.

Chinese paddlers continued to display their prowess in table tennis by completing a clean sweep of all the five gold medals up for grabs on Thursday. They came out winners in all of the day's team event finals: the men's Class 3, ­Classes 4-5 and Class 8, as well as in the ­women's Classes 1-3 and Classes 6-8.
