Editor's Note: The COVID-19 pandemic posed a serious challenge to the coverage of social security that the portion of people at the risk of falling back into poverty and being left behind needed. Social security measures were an important component of the government's emergency response in the context of COVID-19. Through over one year of fighting the epidemic, China confirms the key role of administrative capacity and institutional adaptability in crisis management and emergency responses and demonstrates its strong social security system in withstanding the unprecedented health crisis. COVID-19 has also provided a once in a generation opportunity to learn from and improve on existing policies to be resilient to future crises, for a more sustainable development.
