Dressed head to toe in black, Kim Kardashian appeared at Monday night's Met Gala in New York, capturing the attention of many Chinese netizens who enjoyed coming up with various humorous comparisons for the outfit.

Strictly following the pandemic prevention rules that required guests wear masks, Kardashian covered her entire body from top to bottom in black cloth to attend the event, which took "American independence" as its theme. The Guardian called the look a "fetish-inspired outfit designed by her ex-husband Kanye West."

The gown inspired many a comment from Chinese netizens, who compared the dress to a variety of things such as cartoon characters and fictional monsters.

"It's like the man-in-black from the Japanese animation Detective Conan," commented one netizen on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo. Another post with a large number of likes compared a photo of Kardashian walking on the stairs to a flying Dementor from the Harry Potter films.

Under a Sina Weibo post of a photo of Kardashian standing next to her sister Kendall Jenner, one commenter said, "Kim looks like a shadow under Jenner."

The last time Vogue's Met Gala won such attention from Chinese netizens was in 2015, when its special oriental dress code for the "China: Through the Looking Glass" theme saw guests take a stab at Chinese fashion.

Many celebrities outfits won a round of applause, such as UK actress Emily Blunt's Prada embroidered gown and cape and Chinese actress Gong Li's red velvet  cheongsam designed by Roberto Cavalli.

However, there were also doubts cast at some designs such as singer Rihanna's yellow dress with an incredibly long and large train, which some Chinese said made it look like she was "dragging a huge jianbing guozi (crispy fried pancake)" behind her.
