Chinese President Xi Jinping met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres via video link on Monday, the day that marks the 50th anniversary of People’s Republic of China’s restoration of its lawful seat in the UN.

China held a commemorative meeting for the anniversary on Monday, which Xi noted was to look back at the extraordinary path China and the UN have jointly walked the past 50 years to build a better world.

Xi stressed during the meeting that history has repeatedly demonstrated that no matter how strong a country is, it cannot control others or the world through bullying. On regional hot topics, all countries should abide by UN Charter and principles, respect willingness of the relevant countries and seek a political solution.

There’s only one system, one order, one set of rules, and any country should act within that framework, not do its own things with its own rules. Major powers should mutually respect and co-exist in peace, which is in line with the common interests of the international society, Xi said.

The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a heavy blow to all countries, especially developing countries. Jointly dealing with the pandemic and striving for economic recovery must be coped with properly, Xi said, noting the necessity to enhance aids to developing countries and the fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines worldwide.

China is willing to enhance coordination with the UN to help the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, advancing a balanced, coordinated and inclusive development. All countries should fulfill carbon reduction pledges in line with the Paris Protocol and the common but differentiated responsibilities principle, assisting developing countries’ economic transition, Xi said.

Xi also mentioned the successful holding of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and the 2nd UN Global Sustainable Transport Conference, vowing to support biodiversity protection of developing countries.

Xi stressed that via the 50 years of cooperation between China and the UN, one important lesson is to uphold the UN vision and multilateral path, sincerely contribute to world peace and development. China is willing to work with all countries to build a community of shared future for mankind under the banner of the UN.

Guterres congratulated China on the anniversary, saying the restoration of the lawful seat 50 years ago marked a day of justice. The Secretary-General spoke highly of China’s role in poverty reduction, coping with climate change, protection of biodiversity and making COVID-19 vaccines a public good.

Guterres said unilateralism is unacceptable, and the world should operate in line with principles that all countries accept and solve conflicts via communications. He acknowledged that Xi’s Global Development Initiative has a role to play in enhancing a fair, balanced and sustainable development in the world, and expressed desire to strengthen cooperation with China on that.
