"YYDS" used to be a Chinese internet slang word for praising someone as an "eternal god," but now it has become the focal point of a new exhibition from artist Cai Wanlin that kicked off at Beijing's 798 Art Zone on Sunday.
According to the artist, the name of "YY," the central doll character in his works, can be interpreted as a question posed toward reality, in other words, "Why? Why?"
Exhibition curator Duan Shaofeng drew a connection between the doll that Cai created and the sensational word, saying that it is a yearning for and a belief in the dream life of the artist.
The exhibition is divided into four sections to represent four types of lifestyles, including "talk show performer" and "traveler." Detailed explanations have been provided next to the works to help visitors to better understand the artist's works.
The exhibition is set to run until November 8.
