Iran held official celebrations on Thursday to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of seizing the U.S. embassy in the capital Tehran in 1979.

"Today is for the Iranian nation, a day of great victory," said Hossein Salami, the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), in Iran's capital.

The ceremony took place on the occasion of Iran's "National Day of Fighting Against Global Arrogance" and "Students' Day" in front of the building of the former U.S. embassy, now the U.S. Den of Espionage Museum.

In another event in the city of Semnan, about 180 km east of Tehran, Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi decried decades of U.S. hostility against Iran, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the Iranian nation has been able to "overcome the U.S. hostilities," the Iranian president added.

Every year on this day, Iranians commemorate the seizure of the U.S. embassy with anti-U.S. protests.
