President Xi Jinping met Carrie Lam, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, on Wednesday during Lam's annual duty trip in Beijing.

The meeting took place two days after the Legislative Council election concluded, which Xi called "a good system" in line with the principle of "one country, two systems." He added that it's also in line with the reality of Hong Kong, providing the systematic support for the "one country, two systems."

Xi also acknowledged Lam's work such as fully implementing the national security law for Hong Kong and the electoral reform. He said the city has gone from a period of chaos to stability and the implementation of the laws also safeguard the authority and dignity of the rule of law. Lam's efforts of adopting active measures of containing COVID-19 and boosting the city's economic recovery were also praised.

The successful LegCo election also underscored the principle of only patriots governing Hong Kong. With a broad and balanced participation, the election also showcased the democratic rights of the people of Hong Kong, Xi said.

Lam appreciated that Xi acknowledged the work of the HKSAR government over the past year. She described the year 2021 as very unusual, particularly as it was the year to fully implement the "one country, two systems'' policy. She said she is glad to come to Beijing in person as it's the last annual duty trip in her 5-year term.

She also appreciated the President's attention and care for Hong Kong and for the trust in her for the past years.

This is a developing story. We will update it later.
