Tesla is planning to enhance parts production capacity at its Shanghai factory in a bid to meet export demand, the company said in a newly released environmental impact assessment (EIA) report.

According to the report, which was released on Tuesday to solicit public opinion, Tesla aims to raise the parts production capacity by increasing the number of production plants and the number of workers while improving the equipment start-up rate.

In January, Tesla's Shanghai factory exported 40,499 cars, data from the China Passenger Car Association showed.

The company that produced the EIA report concluded that the construction of the project is feasible from the perspective of environmental protection if measures proposed in the project are carefully implemented.

Tesla's Gigafactory Shanghai continues to be the main export hub of the company, with local production essential for reducing the cost per vehicle and improving the stability of the global supply chain, the company said in its 2021 financial report released in January.

Production of both the Model 3 and Model Y continued to increase throughout 2021, said the company.

In 2021, the Shanghai plant delivered 484,130 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 235 percent. More than 160,000 vehicles were delivered to 10 countries and regions in Europe and Asia, accounting for 51.7 percent of Tesla's global deliveries.
