Residents flocked to a river bank in Kaifeng, Central China's Henan Province, on Sunday to search for ancient coins with shovels and metal detectors.

A video released by local media shows dozens of people with shovels, hoes and other various tools digging and searching in the sand and mud of the Jalu River bank, among them elderly people and children. There were even residents with metal detectors to hunt for coins.

Some citizens did dig up ancient coins. According to the video, some people dug up rusted copper-colored coins presenting a hole in the middle and ancient emperors' reigning years engraved on them.

Many netizens expressed envy for Kaifeng citizens' weekend outdoor recreational activities. "Living in such an ancient capital city, I imagine the residents can experience treasure hunting at any time." One netizen said.

Kaifeng is an ancient city with a thousand-year history and was once the capital of China's Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127).
