A SUNNY EVENING AFTER RAIN

I look down on town wall from my retreat;

With spring just gone, summer weather is clear.

It's Heaven's will to pity green grass sweet;

In human world sunny evening's held dear.

I can see afar from my tower high;

The parting rays make my small window bright.

The Southern birds find their nest again dry;

When they fly back, they feel their bodies light.

晚晴

深居俯夹城,

春去夏犹清。

天意怜幽草,

人间重晚晴。

并添高阁迥,

微注小窗明。

越鸟巢干后,

归飞体更轻。

About the poet 

Li Shangyin was a Tang Dynasty (618-907) poet known for pursing the beauty of poetry over a lifetime.

About the translator 

Xu Yuanchong (1921-2021) was born in Nanchang in East China's Jiangxi Province. He was a professor of literary translation at Peking University.
