perilla / 紫苏 / (zǐsū)

A: I heard that you have researched food treatments. Do you know what kind of plants are edible and can benefit our health?

听说你对食疗很有研究。你知道有哪些植物是可以食用,并有益身体健康吗?

(tīnɡshuō nǐduì shíliáo hěnyǒu yánjiū.nǐ zhīdào yǒu nǎxiē zhíwù shì kěyǐ shíyònɡ, bìnɡ yǒuyì shēntǐ jiànkānɡ ma?)

B: Have you heard of perilla? In folk medicine this plant is considered an antidote herb. It can stop coughs and treat colds.  

你听说过紫苏吗?这种植物在民间被称为解毒草,它有止咳,治疗感冒的作用呢。

(nǐ tīnɡshuō ɡuò zǐsū ma?zhèzhǒnɡ zhíwù zài mínjiān bèi chēnɡwéi jiědúcǎo, tāyǒu zhǐké, zhìliáo ɡǎnmào de zuòyònɡ ne.)

A: Really? So how is perilla leaf used to make food?  

是吗?那紫苏一般如何用于制作美食呢?

B: In northern China, perilla leaf and lettuce are served with barbecued meat.

在中国北方,紫苏叶会和生菜一起搭配烤肉。

A: Does it taste or smell special?  

那紫苏有什么特殊的味道和香气吗?

B: Perilla has a special scent and it is a bit spicy when eaten raw.  

紫苏有一种特殊的香气,生吃会有一点辛辣。

(zǐsū yǒu yīzhǒnɡ tèshū de xiānɡqì, shēnɡchī huìyǒu yīdiǎn xīnlà.)

A: I think using perilla leaf as an ingredient can show the wisdom of culinary culture.
