Meteorologists in Latvia issued a red warning for extreme heat on Monday as the mercury tops 30 degrees Celsius, a sharp rise in the Baltic country known for its mild pleasant summers.

The heatwave was brought by an anticyclone that swept hot and dry air across Latvia over the weekend, said Sanita Peleke, a spokeswoman for the Latvian center of environment, geology and meteorology.

The temperature in western Latvia climbed to a record 30.7 degrees late Monday morning, the center said.

Weather forecasts suggest that the heatwave will continue until the next weekend.

The average summer temperature in Latvia is normally between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius.
