China will open its door wider to the rest of the world, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said on Sunday, noting that China will be "steadfast in deepening reform and opening-up across the board, and in pursuing high-quality development."

Xi was elected general secretary of the 20th CPC Central Committee at the committee's first plenary session held on Sunday, according to a communiqué. The session, presided over by Xi, was attended by 203 members of the 20th CPC Central Committee and 168 alternate members.

When meeting the press at the Great Hall of the People on Sunday, Xi said that a prosperous China will create many more opportunities for the world. Just as China cannot develop in isolation from the world, the world needs China for its development, noted Xi.

Through over 40 years of relentless reform and opening-up, China has created the twin miracles of fast economic growth and long-term social stability, he said. The Chinese economy has great resilience and potential, Xi said. "Its strong fundamentals will not change, and it will remain on the positive trajectory over the long run."

Xi's words about the Chinese economy on this important day will surely convey confidence to the world, which is under the shadow of recession headwinds, reassuring all that China will continue acting as the ballast of the global economy as well as an ideal destination for investors and multinationals, Wang Yiwei, vice dean of the Academy of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Renmin University of China, told the Global Times on Sunday.

"It's also clear that while the US is engaging in building confrontation and unilateralism as well as leading the whole world into a more confrontational and chaotic situation, China, the world's second-largest economy, is doing just the opposite," Wang said.

Chinese observers noted that Xi's remarks on Sunday were in line with his report to the 20th CPC National Congress on October 16. The report unveiled a blueprint for advancing the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts through a Chinese path to modernization.

"We must fully and faithfully apply the new development philosophy on all fronts, continue reforms to develop the socialist market economy, promote high-standard opening-up, and accelerate efforts to foster a new pattern of development that is focused on the domestic economy and features positive interplay between domestic and international economic flows," Xi said in the report.

By accelerating the construction of a new development pattern and promoting high-quality development, China will be able to give full play to its advantages, attract global high-quality resources, and achieve a higher level of opening-up, Cong Yi, dean of the School of Marxism at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, told the Global Times on Sunday.

China's own high-quality development, on the other hand, will benefit the world and thus achieve win-win results, Cong said.
