The burial site of Taliban co-founder Mullah Mohammad Omar Mujahid has been disclosed in Afghansitan's southern Zabul Province, chief spokesperson of Afghanistan's Taliban-run caretaker government Zabihullah Mujahid has said.

"The tomb of late Amirul Mominen [supreme leader] Mullah Mohammad Omar Mujahid was revealed to public at a ceremony attended by ranking officials in Omarzo area of Suri district, Zabul Province, on Sunday," Mujahid tweeted.

Acting Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund and other cabinet members attended the ceremony, according to Mujahid.

After his hierarchy was dethroned from power following the US-led military invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, Omar went underground and according to media reports died of illness in 2013 in Pakistan.

However, his supporters have denied the report, claiming Omar passed away nine years ago inside Afghanistan and was buried secretly to avoid the possible revenge of enemies.

"Since a lot of enemies were around and the country was occupied, to avoid damage to the tomb it was kept secret," Mujahid said.

"Only the close family members were aware of the place," he added.

Pictures released by officials showed Taliban leaders gathered around a simple white brick tomb, covered with what appears to be gravel and enclosed in a green metal cage.

The Taliban took over power of the war-torn country after a hasty US military pullout from Afghanistan in August 2021.
