China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Petrobras have successfully tested the first exploratory well in a deep-sea offshore exploration block in the Santos Basin, Brazil, the Well Gura-1, marking the latest achievement in China-Brazil energy cooperation.

The high oil yield from Well Gura-1 represents a major breakthrough in CNPC's overseas deep-water oil and gas exploration, which lays a foundation for the company to strengthen its global offshore deep-sea oil and gas exploration and development, cultivate talent and accumulate technical management experiences.

The Well Gura-1 is located about 240 kilometers from Santos city, Sao Paulo, with an operating water depth of 1,905 meters. In November 2021, the well confirmed the oil-bearing interval through wireline logging and fluid sampling, and made a major exploration discovery, becoming one of the top 10 crude oil discoveries globally in the past decade.

The technology teams for CNPC and Petrobras determined the well test plan and actively advanced a potential layer test to further clarify the well's productivity.

On October 16, Well Gura-1 completed a phase test and obtained high-yield oil flow.

Through the collection of dynamic production data, a more in-depth analysis and evaluation of the well's productivity were also carried out, which further confirmed the huge production capacity of the block in offshore Brazil.

In the first three quarters of 2022, CNPC and its subsidiaries produced 100.1 million barrels of crude oil overseas, a decrease of 0.6 percent year-on-year. The company is actively promoting the production and operation of key projects in its overseas explorations.
